Easy Home Made Tallow Cream Recipe

There are so many wonderful small businesses making tallow now, I've tried several and if you'd rather buy a finished product I am happy to recommend the ones I like best.
Personally, I decided to make it once I realized a few things.
1) You can buy the tallow already rendered
2) it's hard to find exactly what you are looking for in someone else's product
3) it's getting hot, and tallow doesn't always ship well
4) it's expensive, and I wanted to swap out all my body products, including body lotion, with tallow. Because it's non toxic, but also because I am bring ruthless with my plastic waste, and cutting everything I can. I have sensitive skin, and I always lotion it after I bathe. Body lotions have always been a problem for me, they always come in small portions, and in plastic. The ones that come in larger sizes are never what I need. Coconut oil makes me break out, so anything that contains that isn't an option.
If you are like me, and would rather make it yourself, here you go!
I did use the whole jar, so my measurements are going to be weird, next time I may only use 1 cup at a time.
Ingredients:
1 -11oz jar grass fed beef tallow, I used the Epic brand that I already had on hand
1/4 cup Roots & Leaves Castor oil (but you can use 1/4 cup of any liquid oil you choose!)
2oz Simply Organic, Pure Madagascar Vanilla, Non-Alcoholic Flavoring (you can skip this if you don't like vanilla)
10-33 drops of any essential oil of your choosing. I recommend one by Cliganic, they are organic, high quality & a great price!
Method:
-Take jar of tallow and set it in pot of water, lid off, water should only come 1/2 way up the jar, just to be safe and not get water in the product, which can make it spoil faster
Turn stove on medium heat, and heat tallow until it's just melted
-Pour into mixing bowl
-Combine 1/4-1/3 cup liquid moisturizing oil of your choice
-Mix on low to combine
-Once it's not hot you can start adding in your essential oils, or skip this step completely and leave it unscented! I used 33 drops for 11 oz, I recommend starting with just a few drops and seeing what you like. The scent will increase a bit as it sits.
- Again, I recommend starting small with the essential oils, and adding more as needed, you can keep adding them no matter what stage you are at in the mixing process. Making Tallow cream is actually very forgiving!
-Wait until cool, you can put it in the fridge, but I didn't. You can tell when it's cool enough because it will turn back to cloudy from clear.
-Mix on high until desired consistency!
-Transfer to airtight containers. I only leave out 2-4 oz at a time for use, and keep the rest in the fridge. I find after it sits out for two weeks it does start to get grainy. I keep the rest in the fridge and take out as needed. Once it comes to room temp it's fluffy again!
If you have any issues like a grainy texture develops, or melting, heat it and whip it again. Don't bring it to a boil unless you have to, boiling it will make it grainy right away and I'm not sure you can undo that. The product still works, it's just not as nice to use.
Options for liquid oil for moisture: Jojoba, Castor, Coconut
Great choices for essential oils: Tea Tree, Lavender, Frankincense, Vanilla Oleoresin, get creative! I recommend you research the goal for your product, ie "reduce inflammation" and see what skin safe oil will work best for you. I also recommend buying organic.
That's it! You've reduced your household waste and saved money! Great job!
Let me know in the comments if you tried it, how you made it your own, and if you loved it!
Also reach out if you have any questions.
If you are looking to make Tallow for sale I do not recommend buying store bought tallow, you can buy rendered tallow from several reputable wholesalers.
Personally I prefer wet rendered tallow over dry, as I find dry very dry, a bit burn smelling, and harder to apply. Once applied both products are very similar, and dry is supposed to be safer, bacteria wise.
